Tender Warrior

“We must combine the toughness of the serpent with the softness of the dove, a tough mind and a tender heart.”

Martin Luther King Jr.

For 4.5 years I have uttered prayers for my boys. Make them Tender Warriors, Lord. Who fight for the heart of the King. Make them compassionate for the hurting and the lost. Let it be not that they just fight, but that they fight for what is Right and Good and according to your Word, Oh Lord. There are enough warriors in this land, but please make their character tender.

I saw the work of God in C's heart this week (and an answer to prayer). Weekly he tells me of a little girl in his class whom the other kids are cruel to and daily make her cry. It took me a while to see it as a compassionate heart. Until one day he had learned about the word honor at church. Each kid was given a gold medal and was told to give it away to someone that needed to be honored. Someone who may be under-appreciated and needed to be shown respect.
Monday morning C decided to give his medal away to the little girl in his class who "cries a lot."
There were tears in my eyes as I watched him and as I tried to explain to his mother what it was all about. I finally saw that God has been growing a heart that is tender and compassionate in my son and that he is able to hear God's still small voice speak to him and obey.
Thank you Father for bending down and listeneing to me

In honor of my son, I baked a cake:)
White Chocolate Almond Cake
  • Melted butter for greasing the pan
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 cups unsalted butter, at room temperature
  • 1 8 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
  • 3 cups granulated sugar
  • 6 large eggs, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon almond extract
  • 3 tablespoons milk
  • 1/2 cup finely chopped white chocolate

Directions
  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Using a pastry brush or kitchen towel, lightly coat a 10" tube pan with melted butter.
  2. Sift together flour and salt in a medium bowl. Set aside.
  3. In a stand mixer with the paddle attachment, or with an electric beater, cream together the softened butter, cream cheese and sugar on medium-high speed until light and fluffy. This will take about 5 minutes, being sure to scrape down the sides of the bowl periodically. Add the eggs, one at a time, scraping down the sides again and beating well after each addition. Beat in vanilla and almond extracts.
  4. With the mixer on low, add the flour in two additions, alternating with the milk. Mix until just combined. With the mixer still on low (or with a rubber spatula), stir in the white chocolate. Pour the batter into the prepared pan, mounding the edges up slightly and leaving a bit of a furrow through the middle. Hit the pan against the counter to remove any trapped air bubbles.
  5. While cake is baking, combine the water, sugar and almond extract in a small saucepan over low heat. Cook until the sugar is dissolved and the syrup becomes thick.
  6. The cakes should be done after 75-85 minutes, until a cake tester inserted in the centre comes out clean and the top is golden brown. Allow to cool in pan, on a wire rack, for 10 minutes.
  7. Turn the cake out onto the rack (see note) and, use a pastry brush to coat the cake entirely with the syrup. Allow to cool completely.

and to close with this...........

Prayer for His Son, A
by: Douglas MacArthur, More Sower's Seeds

Build me a son, O Lord,
who will be strong enough to know when he is weak,
brave enough to face himself when he is afraid,

Build me a son,
whose wishes will not take the place of deeds...
Lead him, I pray, not in the path of ease and comfort,
but under the stress and spur of difficulties and challenges.

Let him learn to stand in the storm;
let him learn compassion for those who fall.

Build me a son,
whose heart is clear, whose goals will be high
a son who will master himself before he seeks to master others;
who will reach into the future, yet never forget the past.

And after all these things aer his, add, I pray,
enough of a sense of humor
so that he may always be serious
yet never take himeself too seriously...

Then, I, his father will dare to whisper,
"I have not lived in vain."

Fire Train

From the mind of Caeden and the pen of Mommy
This is OUR poem

Fire Train
When I Dream
I see a
FIre Train that is Red and Fast
Zooming down its track in a blast
Hoses for water
Ladder for height
Travels in daytime and at night

Fire up ahead, Danger in sight
Racing to it with all its might
Water released
Fire is gone
Time to rescue the wild ones

All aboard through the trees
Koalas, Rhinos, and Wallabies
Hurry wild ones
With a shout
Let us bring you safely out

Mom's and Dads anticipate
That Fire Train will not be late
Hugging Now
Home at last
Job well done from what has past

A lesson to learn is here indeed
From Fire Train, a safety plead
Fire is dangerous
Not for play
Learn the signs and Stay Away

we wrote this one day after being inspired by several library books. C was adamant in how he wanted the story told and several times after I would read to him what I wrote down, he would tell me, "that's not what I said." So this is really his poem, he just can't read or write yet :)
we also tried to illustrate the story, but that was hard to scan and since I don't have any artistic talent, it is better to stay off the web for all to mock.

Great Day

This morning over breakfast the boys and I discussed SIN and how it separates us from GOD. It's one of those things that I pour my heart out and use too many words, but never really know if they are listening or retaining anything Then on the drive to school today, I wanted to explain myself one more time about our converstation. I told C that if he asks Jesus into his heart he will receive all of God's power. It ended with Caeden praying with me to ask Jesus into his heart. It was so awesome. I know that he is really young and might not fully understand everything this entails, but we as parents want to celebrate it and encourage him in his new Faith. If you are reading this, please say a prayer for him and us.

Tonight at bedtime, we were discussing Noah and the Ark.
Me: "what did Noah and his family do after they stepped off the ark?"
Caeden: " SIN"
haha i was hoping he would say, worship God, but saying SIN makes me realize that he was in fact listening to me at the breakfast table.

Here is a video of that last few weeks of caeden in his BMX class.
it has been so much fun to watch.

BMX clinic

Week One:

Rental helmet: $2
long sleeve shirt: vintage hand-me-down by Dad
pants: old jeans
bike: His birthday gift
Feeling Nostalgic while our super excited 4 year old boy races around a track: priceless

See the boy racing on his tee? It is Mike when he was 4 years old
That tee is about 30 years old and still in good condition

It is time!
Time for Mike to pass the baton and and hand down his love for BMX down to the next generation. It is time for C to experience the thrill of being a boy who can race as fast as his legs will take him.

On Tues. nights at 6 pm the Naples BMX track has a clinic for beginners. The instructor is a patient and skilled man named Ray. The class consisted of two 4 yr. old boys and two 8 yr. old boys of varying skill levels.

We watched and cheered from outside the fence, while keeping this crazy kid entertained.

The started with the fundamentals:
1)Pedal as hard as you can down hill, on the curves, and on the straightaway
2)Do NOT pedal uphill.
3)Stand up on the bike at all times
4)Learn how to stand and coast without pedaling

Note to self: purchase some exercise pants for my son. Each time he tried to mount his bike, his jeans would get stuck on his seat and he needed help getting his leg over. So cute to watch!
Next they attempted the Ramp
and got some one-on-one training

Finally:
time to tackle the Track

By this time, they had been practicing for over an hour and the sun had gone down. These last two pictures are a little too dark. He raced the entire track twice without falling and without stopping. It was amazing to watch. I should have taken a picture of the elated face and the sweat drenched head after coming off the track. "Can we do that every week?" he asked.

I am thinking about creating a New Blog all about the BMX experience as a family getting started in the sport. A place for parents to find out tips, information and how to get involved. There is nothing out there like this now.
Anyone have a great idea for the Name of this new BLog?
Please leave a comment

What the boys are loving right now!

Leggos

mom: "Owen, what do you want to do today?"

O: "Pway wif toys"

Lately those toys have been Leggos. Caeden built this blue truck all by himself.
There is a fun, creative and challenging component to leggos that is sometimes a little much for me, but I am getting better at it. I enjoy seeing the kids create!

When Daddy gets involved, the creations are much more magnificent!
sometimes, when mom helps, i hear: "that's NOT how Daddy does it"
and i try not to be offended, because Dad should be able to do all things perfect in his eyes

Best Friends

We received a package in the mail from my college roomate and one of my dearest friends.
Inside was a children's book called Gossie and Gertie.
She said it reminded her of my boys.
The story is about two little ducks who:

Wear Boots

are Best Friends

Follow each other everywhere

and

Love each other very much.

Reminds me of two others i used to know

Sara and I circa 1993

and again circa 1997

Sara, my life has forever been impacted by you. At times you have been my conscience, my helper, my shoulder to lean on, and have always remained my friend even though I may not have deserved it. We are one in the same and I am so thankful that God has blessed me with friends that still know me after 16 years. I pray that my boys will experience that in each other.
p.s. we need to see each other soon:)

Crazy Days

Since i have been working more, the boys have fallen in love with Kylie, their babysitter!
The other day she brought over a slip-n-slide which they thought was the coolest thing ever.
Naturally, I let them play on it the next day too, because i figured it would be great for capturing pictures. I am not too fond however, of the boys calling me Kylie instead of mommy. Although it is probably a compliment to me, because she is gorgeous and super sweet.

Today was a crazy day and i feel just like C looks in this next picture......frazzled!!!

I went to Dr. "G" today and learned all kinds of things about my thyroid problem that I never new. 1. stay away from SOY and WHEAT, 2. drink only reverse osmosis water (never chlorinated water), 3. no Bromine which is found in flour, 4. No Caffeine, and 5. use Sea Salt instead of regular salt
My thyroid is enlarged, so i had to have an ultrasound test on it. then i also need to do a 24 hr. urine sample, a blood test, and a basal metabolic temperature test ( think that is how you say that). He actually listened to me and all my crazy symptoms for 30 minutes then at the end of our time, he prayed with me. I had tears in my eyes. I have been on a form of synthroid for over a year and although i feel better than i did before i went on the medication, my recent miscarriage and hormones have gotten my body and system all out of whack again and I think he will help me get back on track....without the use of a bunch of prescriptions.
Meanwhile i have had this darn heart monitor since 3 pm yesterday and it will come off at 3 pm today. The palpitations have stopped but my discomfort and chest tightness hasn't.
I have felt more like a 73 year old than a 33 year old today and I am ready to be normal again.

cement day

This is for Gail...:)
it is no suprise that the kids ideal day would be to spend all day at the Campground with Daddy.  As well, they both have a great love for Cement Trucks.
This was last years cement day at our house when we first started our addition.
And these are some pictures from Woodsmoke the other day when the men were pouring a cement pad.  We got the kids up early, picked up some bagels from Panera and brought them to the guys, and they helped Daddy pour cement.  What a fun day!
